Preparations for Charter Day, one of Retford’s most popular annual events, are progressing thanks to a Community Grant from a group of Bassetlaw District Councillors.
On Bank Holiday Monday 4th May, the town will come alive with celebrations and activities taking place in Kings’ Park, the Market Square, and surrounding streets.
To ensure everyone enjoys the day safely, a £950 Councillor Community Grant will fund professional security stewards in key locations, helping to create a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.
Robin Morrison, Director of Retford Together CIC who help to organise Retford Charter Day, said: “We are hugely grateful to the Retford Councillors for their support through the Community Grant. Charter Day is made possible by the dedication of so many local people and groups, and this funding helps us ensure the day is safe and welcoming for everyone. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together, celebrate Retford, and showcase all that makes our town special.”
The Councillors who have contributed to Retford Charter Day, are: Cllr Malachi Carroll, Ward Member for East Retford West; Cllr David Challinor and Cllr Jonathan Slater, Ward Members for East Retford North; Cllr Susan Shaw and Cllr John Manners, Ward Members for East Retford East.
Cllr Malachi Carroll, Ward Member for East Retford West and Deputy Mayor of Retford spoke on behalf of the Councillors who contributed and said: “Charter Day is one of the highlights of Retford’s calendar, bringing people of all ages together to celebrate our town’s heritage and community spirit.
“We’re delighted to support this year’s event through a Community Grant, helping to ensure it remains a safe and enjoyable day for everyone. It’s fantastic to see the excitement building already, and we look forward to welcoming residents and visitors alike on Monday 4th May.”
Charter Day celebrates the Royal Charter that was first granted to Retford by King Henry III in 1246, which allowed the town to hold an eight-day fair. It was expanded by King Edward I in 1275, which included holding a weekly Saturday market.
Charter Day was revived in 1990 and has gone on to be a major event that draws in thousands of people each year, with one of the main attractions being the Annual Duck Race on the River Idle, organised by the Retford Lions.
You can follow the progress and announcements for Retford Charter Day on their Facebook page.
Each Bassetlaw District Councillor is allocated a small annual budget and has the discretion to award grants to support community activities within their ward. Councillor grants may support projects related to sport, culture and heritage, environmental sustainability, social welfare, and general community benefit.
