Excitement is building as The Nottinghamshire Festival of Science and Curiosity kicks off today, bringing a week of fun‑filled, free activities for families across Bassetlaw.
A programme of events designed to inspire young minds, spark curiosity, and encourage an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) through hands‑on learning will be hosted by Bassetlaw District Council.
As part of the county-wide festival, this year’s programme features a mix of drop‑in and bookable sessions across the district from the immersive ‘Stories in the Stars’ inflatable planetarium show, to creating your own lava lamps, and even speeding up the heart rate with augmented‑reality dodgeball.
Events will run from Monday 16th February to Friday 20th February, taking place at venues including The Bridge Skills Hub in Worksop, Bassetlaw Museum in Retford, and Harworth and Bircotes Town Hall.
Cllr Steve Scotthorne, Cabinet Member for Identity and Place at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “The Festival of Science and Curiosity is a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages across Bassetlaw to get hands on with learning and discovery.
“We’re proud to host events that spark imagination, celebrate creativity, and inspire future generations to explore the world around them. I’d encourage everyone to get involved and make the most of the exciting activities taking place in our district.”
Other activities throughout the week include exploring cyber security through retro computer games, tackling ‘engineering golf’, learning about fusion power at the Fusion Energy Café, and discovering the science behind recycling.
Megan Shore, Programme Manager at Ignite!, said: “We’re excited to welcome families back to the festival this half-term with another packed programme of free events across Bassetlaw. By taking science out of the lab and into local venues, we’re giving children the chance to explore, experiment and have fun and helping families enjoy something special together during the school holidays.”
Bassetlaw District Council has been supported by UKAEA, Laing O’Rourke, Trelleborg, GXO Logistics, South Yorkshire Police, Amazelabs, RNN Group, North Notts College, Active Communities, and the Universities of Sheffield and Nottingham, as well as Sheffield Hallam University and Nottingham Trent University.
