Council Budget agreed for 2026/27

Bassetlaw District Council has approved a balanced budget for the financial year ahead, including an increase in Council Tax of 2.99%.

Through a combination of measures including a commitment to transformation and efficiency, the Council has approved a total spend of £25.4million in the year ahead which will help provide vital services in the district.

It means from 1st April 2026 a Band D property will see an increase of £6.15 or the equivalent of approximately 12p per week. However, around half of Bassetlaw properties are in Band A and they will see an increase of approx. £4.10 spread over the course of the next 12 months, the equivalent of 8p per week.

Cllr Alan Rhodes Cabinet Member for Financial and Corporate Services said: “A Council Tax increase of 2.99% is necessary to sustain frontline services, respond to rising demand and persistent inflationary pressures, and maintain financial stability as we prepare for reorganisation.

“Without this increase, we would face a widening budget gap that would be financially unsound placing essential services at risk, weakening our ability to manage future change, and undermining the stability required for a smooth transition into any new local government arrangements.”

The portion of Council Tax that Bassetlaw receives, just 8.02%, is used to provide essential and statutory services ranging from bin collections, recycling and environmental health to parks and open spaces, planning, licensing and much more.

This small increase will also help to fund some of the council’s spending plans for the year ahead, such as improving efficiency and creating more joined-up, accessible services for residents, boosting reliability in waste and recycling and using smarter management of buildings to reduce costs and improve the use of space.

Council Tax makes up just a portion of the Council’s budget, which is also funded by a combination of Government grants, income from services charged for, and other small sources with the remainder provided through the Local Government Finance Settlement, local business rates and other Government funding.

Councillors also approved changes to the Council Tax Reduction Scheme for 2026/27 which aims to make sure working age people do not miss out on support through an increase in their benefits.

The Council’s increased element of Council Tax (2.99%) is made alongside increases in other major preceptors (based on a Band D property). These include:

Nottinghamshire County Council – 3.99%

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner – 5.07%

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Authority – 5.14%

Parish Councils and Charter Trustees have increased – 8.05% (on average)

These changes will result in an overall increase for a Band D property of 4.15%

Your Council Tax is distributed in the following ways:

Nottinghamshire Police – 11.76%
