Exciting improvements for the Retford Musical Theatre Company are underway thanks to a £1,150 Community Grant by group of Bassetlaw District Councillors.
The grant will allow the group to refurbish the entrance hall to their rehearsal space to create an area which can be used as a waiting area for auditions, additional rehearsal space and a quiet zone for performers. The aim is to make it a welcoming and comfortable place for performers to avoid disrupting the main activity in the rehearsal hall.
Further improvements will see new equipment for performances such as portable speakers and radio microphones, and interior fittings for the main hall include new mirrors and replacing fire doors for safety regulations.
Jane Shelley, Fundraising Secretary of Retford Musical Theatre Company, said: “We’re delighted to have the support of our councillors and truly value their ongoing investment in our local theatre community. This grant means a great deal to us and will help us create a more welcoming and comfortable space for everyone who walks through our doors.
“The funding will also make a wider impact across our company, enabling us to upgrade essential equipment, further develop the talents of our members, and engage more easily in community‑wide events in and around Retford. Everyone in our company gives countless hours of dedication to bringing our performances to life, which makes this grant all the more meaningful. Thank you sincerely for investing in us and putting the spotlight firmly on local talent.”
Originally known as Retford Operatic Society, Retford Musical Theatre Company has been dedicated to entertaining audiences since 1920, while building confidence and developing performance skills.
Cllr Susan Shaw, Ward Member for East Retford East, spoke on behalf of the councillors who contributed said: “We’re very proud to support this project, which will make a real difference to everyone who uses the centre. By refurbishing the entrance hall, the group will be able to create a welcoming and versatile space for performers to wait, rehearse and prepare without disrupting activities in the main hall.
“These improvements, along with new equipment and updated interior fittings, will help strengthen the quality and safety of future performances. We’re delighted to see this much‑loved community venue continue to grow and thrive for local residents.”
