Glass Recycling Collections
Bassetlaw District Council will begin collecting glass from households in the district from the middle of April 2026.
These collections will take place in the same way that your Green Bin for household waste and Blue Bin for recycling are made.
The introduction of glass collections in Bassetlaw is linked to the launch of Simpler Recycling, as well as feedback from residents who said they would prefer to recycle their glass as part of kerbside collections.
This additional service will make it easier for Bassetlaw residents to recycle more of their waste and reduce the amount of waste that is either incinerated or taken to landfill.
To allow for kerbside glass collections, households in Bassetlaw will receive new 180 litre bins in which to place glass, which will be collected every six-weeks. Collection dates will be announced when they are available.

Why have I got another bin and do I have to have it?
All councils in England have been asked by the government to collect more items that can be recycled, this is called Simpler Recycling and will be introduced across the country from April 2026.
As part of this, we are also introducing a glass recycling collection and are currently delivering new bins to all households across Bassetlaw. This is also happening in other areas of Nottinghamshire.
Even if you do not want a black bin, we are required to provide you with one, just like your green bin and your blue bin. This bin will stay with your property should you ever move home. That way, the new people living in that property will also be able to recycle glass.
People living in Bassetlaw have also frequent requested a glass recycling service, in the same way that many of our neighbouring councils do.
What colour is the new bin for glass recycling?
The new bin is black.
How big is the bin?
Each household will receive a 180 litre wheeled bin. For comparison, this is smaller than your Green and Blue Bins which are 240-litre.
Why is my bin so big?
The Black Bins are 180 litre, which are slightly smaller than your regular bins for recycling and waste.
However, rather than your bin being collected every two-weeks, like recycling and general waste, we’ll collect your Black Bin every six weeks.
We understand that different households will generate different amounts of glass between collections, and a bin of this size will cater for the majority of households.
If you think that it will take a long time to fill your bin, that’s fine! You can put it out for every collection or miss a few collections. It’s completely up to you!
When will the glass recycling collections start?
The first collections of glass recycling bins are expected to start from Monday 13th April 2026.
This will be in areas to allow for the training of staff and testing of vehicles.
Households where this is likely to take place will be told in advance.
Residents will be notified of the full rollout of collection dates very soon.
How will I know when my bin will be emptied?
Once collection dates for all households are confirmed, we will write to you and give you a regular collection day.
You will also be able to check your collection dates on our website and via our new app when it is launched.
How often will the bins be emptied?
The bins will be emptied on a six-week cycle.
When is my bin going to be collected?
We will be collecting glass from your home every six weeks. This cycle will begin in the areas where we delivered bins to first.
Check your bin collection days.
What time should I put my bin out?
Please put your bin out at the kerbside by 6am on your collection day.
Can I start to use my bin for glass now?
Yes. But please be aware that we will not be making any regular collections until at least 13th April 2026.
What can go into my bin?
You can put glass bottles or jars of any colour in your new bin as long as they are clean and empty. Below is a list of items we can and cannot accept in your black bin.
Yes please
- Wine and beer bottles
- Sauce and condiments jars
- Cosmetics jars

Any other items can be put in your Green Bin, or taken to the household waste Recycling Centres. These can include:
No, thank you

- Vases

Do the lids need to be taken off the bottles and jars?
Where possible please remove all lids, corks or stoppers before placing the glass in your bin. Lids that do not come off can stay on.
Do the labels need to be removed?
No, there is no need to remove the labels from the glass jars or bottles.
Do I have to pay for my glass recycling bin?
There is no additional charge for this new glass collection service.
I have just moved into my new home and don’t have a black bin. How can I get one?
If you have not received a bin during the phased delivery schedule, please contact our customer services team on 01909 533 533, email customer.services@bassetlaw.gov.uk.
Can I get two glass recycling bins?
We are anticipating that residential households will only require 1 glass bin.
Can you help me put my bin out?
Yes. If you already receive assisted collections for your blue and green bin, this will continue for your glass bin. If you think you may qualify for this service, please contact Waste Management on 01909 534 501 or go to our Assisted Bin Collections page.
I already receive assisted bin collections. Will I need another sticker for this bin?
If you are already registered on the assisted bin scheme, your new black bin will be added. You will not need to display a sticker on your black bin due to the in-cab technology used within our refuse vehicles that will identify the addresses of residents receiving assisted bin collections.
What happens if I live in flats or use a communal bin?
Individual addresses and their residents will be informed of how they can recycle glass.
What if my bin is lost or damaged?
Please contact our customer services team on 01909 533 533 or email customer.services@bassetlaw.gov.uk.
What is Simpler Recycling?
Simpler Recycling aims to standardise recycling across the country and make it easier for households to understand how to recycle more of their waste and reduce the amount of waste that is either incinerated or taken to landfill.
The Government has introduced legislation that requires all local authorities and waste collectors to standardise and simplify recycling and waste across the country.
This will be introduced in March 2026.
Why are we collecting glass separately?
Glass can be recycled an unlimited number of times, because the material doesn't lose quality or purity during the recycling process. It can be melted down and made into new glass products endlessly, which makes it highly sustainable. This process also saves energy and raw materials compared to making glass from scratch.
We are also investing in new collection vehicles which means that there is less chance of any glass finding its way onto our streets during the collection process. There’ll be more exciting news to come on this!
How are we going to collect glass?
We will be using three specialist vehicles that will collect your glass recycling. These are different from our current collection vehicles and are designed to be safer for our staff and residents.
We have accounted for some addition noise when collections are made and the first collections of glass are expected to begin after 7am.
Are we using recycled plastic for the bins?
Yes, the black wheelie bins are made from recycled plastic, including old and damaged wheelie bins, and other rigid plastic to make your new bin.
What will happen to the current Glass Recycling Stations?
The glass banks that are owned by Bassetlaw District Council will be removed over time, including locations within supermarkets and pubs.
Individual businesses may, in the future, wish to host their own bottle banks.
