Leader's Column 20/03/26

Across our district, we are not just witnessing change - we are shaping a future that could transform our local economy for generations.

Projects like STEP Fusion and the Trent Supercluster are breathing new life into our former coal power station sites, turning them into engines of Britain’s clean energy revolution. The very places that once powered our industrial past are now helping to drive the nation’s scientific and technological future.

At West Burton, the STEP Fusion programme continues to gather pace. Earlier this week we welcomed the announcement of the site’s major construction partner, ILIOS - another milestone in a project that is already putting our district on the map. But the true impact of these developments stretches far beyond the site boundary. They will create thousands of well paid, skilled jobs, open new skills pathways, and spark exciting science led opportunities for our young people right across our communities.

Celebrating dedication and achievement is something that matters to me, and Worksop’s own Liam Palmer has given us a perfect example. Last week he made his 500th appearance for Sheffield Wednesday - an extraordinary milestone. In 159 years of club history, only four players have ever gone further. His loyalty, determination and passion are qualities that I hope will inspire the next generation to chase excellence in whatever they choose to do.

This week we also come together to celebrate the incredible people who make our district such a special place at our annual Achievers Awards. These awards shine a light on residents who give their time to help others, excel in sport, business or the arts, or show courage and bravery that lifts us all. They have been nominated by members of the public, schools, community groups, Councillors and Parish Councils - a testament to the impact they have on those around them.

Their efforts strengthen our community every single day, and I am truly grateful for everything that they do.
