Helpful guides for your home

Lighting and lightbulbs

It's your responsibility to change light bulbs around your home. This includes the light fittings you might find in your kitchen or bathroom.

Enclosed light fittings

Your kitchen and bathroom lights are likely to be enclosed light fittings. If the bulb stops working, it is your responsibility to change it. If you have difficulty, please ask a friend or family member to help you.

  1. Before you start, make sure the light is turned off.
  2. Remove the cover - depending on the light, there may be screws or clips holding it in place.
  3. Remove the bulb - hold the centre point of the bulb unit (not the bulb itself), and pull it out of the fitting.
  4. Buy a new bulb - it's often a good idea to take the old bulb with you, to help you find the right replacement.
  5. Push the new bulb into place, and reattach the cover.

Top tips:

  • Keep a spare bulb at home, so that you're not left in the dark if one of your bulbs fails
  • There are a few sizes of bulb - make sure you get one with the right number of pins. Depending on the style of light fitting in your home, you will need a 16W 2D bulb with two pins, or a 28W 2D bulb with two or four pins.

Fluorescent tubes and starters

The tubes can be easily pulled out of the fitting - make sure the light is switched off. The starter, where fitted, is a small cylinder inserted into the side of the light fitting. These can also be easily pulled out of the fitting and replaced.

Pressurising your gas boiler

If the pressure to your gas boiler is too low your heating and hot water may not work. In most cases the boiler pressure can be easily topped up by following the written instructions which you should receive when you move in. You can also access instructions and videos online by typing the boiler make and model into your search bar.
