Bassetlaw District Council is teaming up with local charity Groundwork Five Counties for another year to provide tenants with advice on preventing damp, mould and disrepair alongside energy-saving advice.
The charity’s Green Doctor team have been making visits to residents across the district for two years, inspecting homes and giving bespoke advice to help prevent these issues from forming and putting plans in place to remedy existing problems.
Last year 333 properties were inspected for damp, mould and disrepair. If the advice given is followed across all households, it would lead to approximately £97,482 total savings yearly, or £293 per household.
Cllr Lynne Schuller, Cabinet Member for Housing and Estates said: “We look forward once again to working with Groundwork Five Counties over the coming year with their Green Doctor team.
“Their work with our tenants to prevent damp, mould and disrepair is valuable, alongside helping people to save money and use their gas, electricity and water more efficiently.
“This shows our commitment to work with and for our tenants actively working with partners to provide decent homes.”
The scheme works on a referral basis, and tenants should report damp repairs in the normal way to the council who will, if appropriate, refer cases to Groundwork Five Counties.
The Council also runs a proactive survey programme based on housing stock it knows suffers disproportionately in terms of the risk of damp.
Darryl Plummer, Programmes Director at Groundwork Five Counties, says: “Our Green Doctors work hard to ensure homes are safe from health hazards like damp and mould, which can have serious consequences.
“We also give money-saving advice, helping people be better off by finding the best energy tariffs, identifying discounts, and encouraging easy behavioural changes at home that save money.
“We are very pleased to continue our collaboration, and look forward to helping hundreds of homes this year.”
Where needed, the Green Doctors also give support to access other services. This could be anything from emergency fuel and food to energy debt advice, help with applying for benefits and grant funding.
