Bin collections in Bassetlaw are continuing despite a fire causing severe damage to a waste transfer station that is used by the district council.
Residents are asked to put their bins out as normal with the majority of residents not experiencing any disruption to their weekly collections.
However, a small number of household collections could potentially be affected, and should your bin not be emptied, please leave this out and it will be collected the following day. Any disruptions to rounds will be reported on the Council’s website and social media channels.
Cllr Darrell Pulk, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “Since the fire at Claylands in Worksop, we are doing our very best to ensure that residents do not feel the impact of this significant incident that has created a number of operational problems behind the scenes.
“Our crews are working extremely hard to make their collections as normal, in addition to travelling extra distances in order to deposit waste at alternative locations in Mansfield, Newark, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Oxton.
“In a small number of instances, we may not be able to finish a round, but we ask residents to leave your bin out and we will collect it as part of our collections the next day. We apologise for any disruptions this may cause residents and I’d like to thank council staff, especially our Refuse Collectors, who are working extremely hard to return to a normal service as soon as possible.”
The site on Claylands Avenue in Worksop, owned by Veolia, is primarily used by Bassetlaw District Council to deposit household recycling, general waste, garden waste and other waste collections by the council’s Housing and Parks Teams.
However, a fire took hold in the building in the early hours of Wednesday 20th August, which took a total of 169 firefighters from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Services two days to extinguish.
In this time, staff at Bassetlaw District Council have been working with colleagues at Nottinghamshire County Council, the Waste Disposal Authority, and its contractor Veolia, to provide alternative locations where recycling and waste can be sorted so that collections in Bassetlaw can continue as normal.
Residents are also being asked to sort, recycle and dispose of their household items the correct way as a spokesperson for Veolia warned of the dangers of placing the wrong items in your bin.
They said: “Although the cause of the fire has not been confirmed, waste fires often ignite due to flammable items amongst the collected waste materials such as vapes, electrical items, batteries or gas canisters. Residents are reminded to think before disposing of these items and to check their Council’s website for what should and shouldn’t be disposed of in household bins.”
More information on what items can be recycled in Bassetlaw, as well as information on collections, can be found on the Bins for Recycling and Waste pages.
