We recently set a balanced budget for the year ahead, outlining our commitment to Bassetlaw’s future and to the essential services you rely on every single day. From bin collections and recycling to parks, open spaces, planning and licensing, we are protecting what matters most to our communities.
This budget has been shaped by you. Through our Budget Conversation with residents, we listened carefully, adapted our plans and identified efficiency savings, not by cutting frontline services or undermining our staff, but by working smarter, transforming how we deliver services and applying disciplined financial management.
As part of this responsible approach, we have made the difficult decision to increase Council Tax. For nearly half of households in the district, those living in a Band A property, this represents around 8 pence per week. Of the total Council Tax collected, we receive only 8 percent, with our increase the lowest among the major preceptors.
We remain firmly committed to supporting those who need it most. Our Council Tax Reduction Scheme offers up to 95% support, alongside the 25% single-person discount. To find out more visit www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/council-tax-reduction-scheme
We have also approved an ambitious Housing Capital Programme that will invest more than £94 million into our tenants’ homes over the next five years. This includes £40 million to meet the Decent Homes Standard, delivering new kitchens and bathrooms, upgraded windows and doors, and real improvements to quality of life for thousands of residents, alongside a further £11.4 million investment in our estates.
This Sunday, communities across the country will come together for the nationwide COVID-19 Day of Reflection. It is a moment to pause, remember those we lost, honour the sacrifices made, and recognise the extraordinary dedication of health and social care staff, frontline workers and volunteers. It is also a time to reflect on the incredible community spirit that carried us through such a challenging period - the kindness, resilience and solidarity that defined us at our best.
Finally, as the milder weather begins to arrive, many of us will be heading back into our gardens to welcome the spring. If you’re planning those seasonal tidy-ups and pruning jobs, there’s still time to sign up for our Garden Waste Collection scheme. Our fortnightly service runs until the end of November, making it easier than ever to keep your garden looking its best. You can find out more about the scheme and subscribe by visiting www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/gardenwaste
Together, we’re investing in our services, supporting our residents and building a stronger Bassetlaw for the year ahead.
