Grants support RBL’s ‘Operation Christmas’

It was mission accomplished for the Retford Branch of the Royal British Legion after their successful ‘Operation Christmas’ received support from a group of Bassetlaw District Councillors.

The festive event allowed veterans who struggle with loneliness and social isolation to celebrate together and enjoy Christmas Lunch and some military camaraderie.

Approximately 80 members attended the lunch, with a councillor grant of £550 helping to fund transport to The Well in Retford and entertainment for the veterans.

Jane Harris, Vice President of the Royal British Legion’s Retford and District Branch, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the councillors whose generous support has made this Christmas Lunch possible. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our members to come together, share in the festive spirit, and celebrate the camaraderie that makes our branch so special. Their backing truly shows how much our community is valued and supported.

Cllr Malachi Carroll, Deputy Mayor of Retford and Ward Member for East Retford West spoke on behalf of the Councillors who contributed to the grant added: “We’re delighted to support Operation Christmas and help bring our Armed Forces community together this festive season.

“The Royal British Legion does incredible work all year round, and this grant ensured that veterans in Retford were able to enjoy a warm meal, companionship, and the recognition they deserve at Christmas. It’s a small gesture of gratitude for their service, and we’re proud to play a part in making it happen.

The Councillors who contributed towards the Christmas Lunch were: Cllr Malachi Carroll and Cllr Harriet Digby, Ward Members for East Retford West; Cllr Graham Oxby, Cllr Jonathan Slater and Cllr David Challinor, Ward Members for East Retford North and Cllr Lynne Schuller, Ward Member for Harworth and Bircotes.
