Businesses in Worksop’s Town Centre are getting new support through the Pride in Place Programme.

Supporting businesses and attracting new businesses to Worksop as well as reducing vacancy rates was one of the priorities identified through Worksop Together’s initial engagement activities.

The Worksop Together Board, working in partnership with Bassetlaw District Council, have launched three grants for businesses to apply for: the High Street Shop Fit Out Grant, the Worksop Shop Frontage Grant and the High Street Business Support Grant.

These grants will help improve how the area looks, reduce the number of empty properties and diversify the shopping and eating out offer.

Andria Birch, CEO of Bassetlaw Community Voluntary Service (BCVS) and Chair of the Worksop Together Board said:We know that one of the top concerns expressed by local people in Worksop Together’s community engagement work remains the number of vacant units on our high street.

"I’m therefore very pleased that one of the first programmes supported by the Worksop Together Board has been to allocate some of the Pride in Place funding to three Business Support schemes; the High Street Shop Fit Out Grant, Shop Frontage Grant and Business Support Grants.

“These schemes, with total funding of £120k, will help to support local businesses and attract new businesses to fit out currently vacant units on a first come, first served basis.

"To find out more about the grants visit www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/community-and-living/worksop-together-board/”.

Grants of up to £15k are available under the High Street Shop Fit Out scheme to support new businesses with structural works or equipment needed to trade from currently vacant premises within the designated area.

Applications can be made by independent businesses for grants of up to £10k from the Worksop Shop Frontage Scheme, to be eligible the shop front must be on the ground floor and be street facing within the designated area. This can be used for work including replacing doors or windows, painting, signage, security measures or improving accessibility.

Finally, for micro and small enterprises who already work with the council’s High Street Business Support programme, and employ up to 49 people, can bid for grants of up to £3k under the Business Support Grant. This can be used in areas such as developing a website, the introduction of e-commerce or developing a marketing plan.

Cllr Steve Scotthorne, Cabinet Member for Identity, Planning and Place said: “We want to attract more businesses to our high streets, and providing grants like these is one effective way to achieve that.

“We hope they will encourage new investment, create opportunities, and help reduce the number of vacant properties in the town.”

The money is part of the £20million Pride in Place funding which has been allocated to Worksop and the surrounding area over the next ten years to create new opportunities, boost growth and address local issues.
