Splash Park Update

Splash Park Update

All three of our Splash Parks in Bassetlaw are currently closed and we appreciate how disappointing this is, especially while the weather is so nice. However, the safety of everyone using these popular facilities is our main concern.

Since closing our splash parks, because of an issue with the water quality, we have been contacted by a number of residents asking for more information and we would like to take this opportunity to answer these questions.

The decision to close our splash parks is based on the results of the most recent samples taken at each splash park, which showed levels of bacteria called Pseudomonas (aeruginosa).

We have spoken with the UK Health Security Agency, who have advised that prolonged exposure to these bacteria can lead to symptoms including skin irritations and mild infections, e.g. ear infections or contact with open wounds, which can take up to five days to present themselves.

This decision has also been taken as a precaution to protect people who have a low immune system or existing health conditions and could face an increased risk.

The safety of people using our Splash Parks is extremely important to us, and since receiving these results, we are now in the process of rigorously deep cleaning our splash parks, which includes disinfecting the splash park surfaces, jets, drainage, pipework and plant rooms.

Following guidance from experts in water management, we will also be increasing our daily and weekly water treatment routines and monitoring so that we have the best chance possible of preventing instances like this from happening again.

The recent results are a consequence of enhanced testing, which was adopted following a recommendation from an external body who inspected all of our parks earlier this year.

We are aware that this level of testing is not common practice with all operators of splash parks, and this is not something we are legally required to do. However, we have now chosen to enhance our testing so that we can provide the best facilities possible for our visitors.

Retesting will take place in all our splash parks once the deep clean has been completed. When samples are taken and cultured in laboratory conditions, we are notified of the full results between 7 to 10 days later.

We will only reopen the splash parks when we have a clear set of test results.
