A local charity is helping to support families throughout the school holidays with essential products thanks to a £1,350 Councillor Community Grant.
From The Heart Charity based in Worksop run a campaign called The Holiday Hunger Scheme which helps distribute food parcels and toiletries to support families experiencing financial hardship during the school holidays and half term breaks.
The scheme has already supported 1,224 children and provided 6,430 meals to families in need across the District and the grant, donated by a group of Bassetlaw District Councillors, will help to purchase more food and essential toiletries.
Jess McGlone, Charity Coordinator at From The Heart Charity said: "We are incredibly grateful to the councillors who generously contributed to our Holiday Hunger Scheme.
“Their funding will make a real difference to families across Worksop and the district during the school holidays, helping us provide essential food parcels and toiletries to those who need them most. At a time when many households face increased financial pressures, this support ensures that local children and families can access vital supplies and receive a helping hand when it matters most.”
Cllr Clayton Tindle, Cllr Josie Potts and Cllr John Shephard, Ward Members for Worksop South-East spoke on behalf of the councillors who contributed, and said: "We are delighted, alongside our fellow councillors, to have been able to support From The Heart Charity and its Holiday Hunger Scheme through our councillor grants. The work they do throughout Bassetlaw is making a real difference to families facing financial hardship, particularly during school holidays when many households can come under additional pressure.
“We would like to thank all the volunteers at From The Heart Charity for their hard work, dedication and compassion. Their commitment to supporting local people ensures that families across our district have access to essential food and toiletries when they need them most. This is a fantastic example of communities coming together to help one another, and we are proud to support an initiative that has already helped so many children and families across Bassetlaw."
The councillors who contributed towards the Holiday Hunger Scheme are: Cllr Julie Leigh and Cllr Tony Eaton, Ward Members for Worksop South; Cllr Josie Potts, Cllr Clayton Tindle and Cllr John Shephard, Ward Members for Worksop South-East; Cllr Cliff Entwistle, Ward Member for Worksop East; Cllr Fraser Merryweather, Ward Member for Worksop North-East; Cllr Maria Charlesworth, Ward Member for Worksop North and Cllr Susan Shaw, Ward Member for East Retford East.
Since From The Heart Charity was formed in 2017, the charity has raised over £15,000 for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity and other families’ appeals in the local community.
The sole aim of the charity is to make in-roads to alleviate severe systemic socio-economic deprivation and persistent poverty to local families with children and young people and provide them with the resources they need to lead a better quality of life.

Each Bassetlaw District Councillor is allocated a small annual budget and has the discretion to award grants to support community activities within their ward. Councillor grants may support projects related to sport, culture and heritage, environmental sustainability, social welfare, and general community benefit.
