A record £2.5 billion of additional funding has been announced this week by the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer, to support the development of the world’s first fusion power plant.
The new prototype plant, known as STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) will be built at the site of the former West Burton A coal power station near Retford and Gainsborough.
Cllr Charles Adams, Cabinet Member for Business and Skills at Bassetlaw District Council said:
“We welcome this £2.5 billion investment announced by the government to support the development of the UK’s first prototype fusion energy plant being built in West Burton.
“This shows a real commitment to this ambitious project – the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production, known as STEP - which will significantly boost our local economy.
“For Bassetlaw, it's predicted over the next 45 years it will create a yearly average of more than 500 construction and 1,460 operations related jobs.
“As well as employment opportunities, and improving transport links, it is also estimated it will bring a yearly average economic boost worth £111 million for the district when operational.
“As we look to become the greenest, most sustainable district in which to live and work, STEP will help make this possible.”
