A man who failed to pay a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice for dropping a cigarette butt in Worksop Town Centre has now been ordered to pay £729 by Nottingham Magistrates.
Christopher Bartholomew, 69, from Wilson Avenue in Clowne was seen by an Environmental Enforcement Officer throwing down a cigarette end on Newcastle Avenue on 10th May 2024.
He was handed a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice but failed to pay and was charged on 19th September 2024 under section 87 and 88 Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Bartholomew pleaded not guilty but failed to attend Nottingham Magistrates Court on 2nd June 2025 and was found guilty in his absence.
He was ordered to pay a fine of £100, repay the council's legal costs of £589, and a victim surcharge of £40.
Cllr Darrell Pulk, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods said: “This prosecution sends a clear message that littering is not acceptable and we will act where necessary to help keep our streets clean.
“Dropping litter pollutes our environment, makes our streets look untidy as well as being a criminal offence. We want people to dispose of their waste responsibly either by using bins that are available or by taking litter home.”
