The Leader of Bassetlaw District Council is looking forward to continuing to deliver projects, which improve the aspirations and life chances of the people who live and work here, over the coming 12 months.
Cllr Julie Leigh, speaking at the Council’s Annual General Meeting held on Wednesday 14th May, highlighted work to revitalise our town centres including the £20m redevelopment of Worksop’s Priory Centre and the District Council being among the first four ‘Early Adopters’ of the Government’s High Street Rentals Auction Programme which aims to regenerate our high streets.
Work bringing in business and employment opportunities are continuing, including the project to build the UK’s first prototype fusion power plant at West Burton. An economic impact assessment predicted more than six and a half thousand jobs a year could benefit Nottinghamshire residents at the peak of operations.
Elsewhere, over £103m is being invested in the Council’s homes and estates including raising the energy efficiency of council tenant’s homes helping to reduce energy bills, while more investment is being made into the Council’s Independent Living Schemes.
Cllr Julie Leigh, Leader of Bassetlaw District Council said:
“Looking ahead we have also secured a further one point three million pounds from the Government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund to help kickstart economic growth and promote opportunities.
“We look forward to seeing the positive impact this latest funding will have on residents and businesses supporting an uplift in skills, providing cultural opportunities, community engagement and business growth.
“We also have a clear plan about how we will achieve savings and generate additional income to further support and enhance what we do for our residents, businesses and communities. This includes a new commercial strategy to enable us to deliver commercial services more effectively with the income generated reinvested to fund local services and priorities.
“Finally, we will continue to work collaboratively with the eight other councils in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire to ensure the best outcome for residents and businesses in plans for Local Government re-organisation. This is the biggest change facing local government for 50 years and it is vital that we get this right for everyone.
“Personally, I am very grateful to all of our staff, who work hard to provide the excellent services that our residents deserve, and I am grateful to Members for your support and hard work over the last year. I expect more of the same next year as I know that you and our staff all strive to make Bassetlaw the best place to live, to work and to aspire.”
