Refuse Driver - Job Description

Team: Refuse (Environment Services)

Job Title: Refuse Driver

Grade: Grade 3

Responsible to: Waste & Street Cleansing Manager 

General job objective: To deliver a wide range of Environment services such as the collection of waste materials from Domestic Households, trade properties and the other street cleansing within the District. To promote and support the principles of waste minimisation and recycling and improve environmental cleanliness.

Point of note: When required, the post holder will be expected to work Bank Holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Key Tasks:

  1. On a day-to-day basis to drive and be responsible for any allocated refuse collection vehicle.
  2. To deliver and dispose collected waste/recyclables, tipping of refuse at landfill or other sites, delivery of replacement wheeled bins to domestic & commercial properties and as required, driving the relevant delivery vehicle permitted by a standard car driving license (non LGV).
  3. Carry out safety and operational checks of vehicle and equipment before leaving the depot and checking and cleaning on their return
  4. Keep records in drivers log book, and liaise with the Supervisor on any issues that have arisen throughout the day including any missed bin, contamination or access issues.
  5. Support the refuse crew in providing them with the necessary health and safety information/instruction to enable them to safely carry out their task
  6. To be the senior member of the crew, responsible for the transportation and supervision of all crew members during the allocated refuse collection schedule
  7. Ensure at all times protective clothing and equipment is worn and correctly used by the refuse crew
  8. Acting in liaison with managers on matters of discipline, policy and in the handling of complaints to ensure that all premises are cleared of refuse.
  9. Prepare regular reports, including the recording of additional or fewer properties in the refuse collection area, and the delays and lost time.
  10. In liaison with the refuse crew, ensure and promote good operational relationships between the service and members of the public.
  11. Ensure compliance at all times with appropriate Health and Safety at Work legislation, taking responsibility for your own Health and Safety and that of your colleagues and members of the public.
  12. When required, undertake refuse loading tasks.

The post holder is required to carry out any other duties appropriate for the grade and responsibility level of the post.

The post holder will be required to comply with relevant legislation and in accordance with the Council’s policies and procedures.

The post holder will be employed under the NJC Conditions of Service for Local Government Services.
