Member of Youth Parliament - Darcy Griffiths

Darcy Griffiths has recently started her 1st term as the Member of Youth Parliament for Bassetlaw. The UK Youth Parliament is a governmental organisation that ‘enables young people to use their energy and passion to change the world for the better’.

Darcy’s comment: ‘I am truly appreciative of the Bassetlaw Youth Council and every opportunity it has granted my colleagues and I. These roles have equipped me with a high calibre skillset ready for the future. My main priorities have always been to understand the needs of our young people and act accordingly.’

Darcy joined the BYC when she was elected as MYP in February 2022. Her manifesto was to ‘Campaign to offer more support to young people struggling with mental illnesses. Counselling should be available to everyone who needs it quickly and efficiently and there should be more councillors trained for specifically young people and the problems faced by them. Also, teachers should have a basic training on mental health and what to do in a crisis, so no one has to feel alone and helpless when support is needed.

Campaign to encourage better mental health in young people. We should be better educated on mental health and schools should teach the importance of mental health and how to maintain it. Also, there should be more youth centres to provide a safe space for young people to socialise.’

Below is a short timeline of Darcy’s journey as a youth councillor:

  • February 2022: Elected as MYP for Bassetlaw
  • April 2022: Joined the Bassetlaw Food Insecurity Network to deliver better mental health care linked with food and mood.
  • May 2022: Met with the MP for Bassetlaw, Brendan Clarke-Smith
  • July 2022: Attended the Youth Parliament’s 22nd Annual Conference in Hull, and discussed issues the Youth Parliament would be taking to Parliament.
