Member of Youth Parliament - Cameron Holt

Cameron Holt began his first term as Member of Youth Parliament (MYP) for Bassetlaw in March 2024. Cameron will continue in this role until March 2026, and will work to make positive change for young people in the area. Cameron joined the Bassetlaw Youth Council in December 2023.

Commenting on his victory and plans as MYP, Cameron said, “I feel very fortunate and proud to take on this vital role for the next two years. I am passionate about making our home a better place for young people, and will focus on ensuring that the voice of the youth is amplified like never before. I aim to keep young people constantly updated and informed, as I feel that a greater presence from their MYP is needed.”

During the campaigning stages, Cameron presented his manifesto to voters. Key points in this included:

  1. Increase time spent learning about finances and taxation in secondary schools.
  2. Increase leisure facilities for the youth in Bassetlaw.
  3. Reduce and remove the price of sanitary products.
  4. Reduce litter around the paths and streets of Bassetlaw.

Bassetlaw MYP, Cameron Holt, will now work hard to get as much progress on his manifesto done as possible. Of course, none of these aims can be guaranteed, but it is the role of an MYP to do their best to make it happen.

UK Youth Parliament

The UK Youth Parliament is a governmental organisation that ‘enables young people to use their energy and passion to change the world for the better’. Within a Member of Youth Parliament’s (MYP) role, they should: meet regularly with our local MP; engage with Bassetlaw’s young people; run campaigns; hold debates; and ensure that the youth’s opinions are valued by decision makers. Towards the end of the year, all MYPs in England meet at the House of Commons to take their seat and debate what is important to young people. In 2024, the winner of the ‘Make Your Mark’ ballot was ‘Health and Wellbeing’, which will therefore be the topic of debate in the UK Youth Parliament this year.

There are seven constituencies in Nottinghamshire, but only four MYP positions available due to population sizes. Each constituency has a UK Youth Parliament representative; however, only the four election winners who received the most votes (out of Nottinghamshire as a whole) become MYPs for their constituencies, whilst in the other areas winners become deputy MYPs. Cameron Holt received enough votes to become one of Nottinghamshire’s four Members of Youth Parliament, meaning he has a seat in the House of Commons in order to represent Bassetlaw.
