Council Tax support for thousands of residents

Thousands of households in Bassetlaw will receive help with their Council Tax this week as part of a raft of Government financial support measures that have been put in place during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Around 4,300 working age residents in Bassetlaw who were eligible for Council Tax Reduction on 1st April will automatically receive a further discretionary reduction of up to £150 and households whose balance on their bill is less than £150 will now have this reduced to zero.

Residents who are already eligible do not need to apply for this reduction. Their payments will be amended automatically and a new bill will be sent out. Any claimants who applied after 1st April will have their payments assessed and, if they are eligible, their bills will automatically be reduced by up to £150 over the course of the year.

Cllr Kevin Dukes, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “This funding will be a lifeline for households that were already in financial hardship before the Coronavirus restrictions were imposed, and for those residents whose situation may now have been compounded further.

“If you are having difficulties paying your Council Tax we are here to help and we have already received a high number of claims for Council Tax Reduction in the last few weeks as a direct result of Coronavirus restrictions.

“Our Revenue and Benefits Team is working hard in difficult circumstances to process all of these payments and new applications, as well as helping residents by answering the thousands of phone calls that we have received over the last few weeks. I’d like to thank them for their hard work and would please ask residents to be patient and understanding while we all work through this challenging time. We are still hear to answer your calls, but this may take a little longer than normal.”

You can apply for Council Tax Reduction online and if your claim is successful, you will automatically receive up to a £150 reduction and a new Council Tax bill will be sent to you. Please visit the Council Tax Reduction pages of our website for more information.
