Bassetlaw District Council website rated highest in Nottinghamshire on its accessibility

Bassetlaw District Council’s website has been ranked 14th nationally on its accessibility, its ability to make sure that there are no barriers that stop people with disabilities from reaching and using the website.

Making a website accessible means it can be used by as many people as possible, including people with impaired vision, motor difficulties, deaf or hard of hearing and learning disabilities.

The website was rated by Sitemorse, a service that measures how well websites are performing in eight different areas. Sitemorse checks that websites are accessible to those wishing to use it and is working as expected to. The tests look at the code that forms the website, the page’s clickable links, spelling, brand, email and the web browser(s) the site can found on.

Four times a year Sitemorse releases the findings of its tests in the Sitemorse Audit, a report that shows the ranking of each website so that they can be compared to each other.

In the most recent Sitemorse Audit, the Council’s website was placed 14th out of 399 District Council websites, making it the highest ranked local authority website within Nottinghamshire, overtaking those belonging to neighbouring authorities including Ashfield, Broxtowe, Gedling, Mansfield, Newark and Sherwood and Rushcliffe Councils.

In the 4th report of 2019, the Council’s website was placed at position 79 and has since made improvements that have allowed the site to jump to rank 14. The Council website has an overall score of 8.9 out of 10.

Councillor Kevin Dukes, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services said, “This is a great result for the Council and shows how we continually improve our services and accessibility or all the residents of Bassetlaw.  Praise should be given to the team at Bassetlaw District Council involved in this.”

He added, “Our web presence is a vitally important means of communication with the residents of Bassetlaw and it is imperative that this does not stand still but reflects changes in both the way people want to access our services and the ever changing face of technology.”
