School Sweep up and Spring Clean

A pupil from St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School in Bircotes has been given the honour of naming one of Bassetlaw District Council’s brand new Street Sweepers.

Children taking part in St Patrick's Catholic School, Bircotes Spring CleanRiley Cooper, aged 8, came up with the name ‘Sweep Clean Squad’, inspired by the team of council workers who clean the district streets every day, as part of a competition run by the school.

Riley and her fellow pupils got to see her suggestion emblazoned on the side of the sweeper when it visited the school. They even got to see the sweeper in action and had the chance to sit in the cab and ask questions.

As well as naming the sweeper, the children of St Patrick’s took part in a litter pick for Bassetlaw Spring Clean and collected 20 bags of rubbish from around the perimeter and within the school grounds.

Councillor Julie Leigh, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods said: “I would like to congratulate Riley on coming up with the winning name of the sweeper, I think it is a very fitting name for our team of street cleaners, who are out every day keeping Bassetlaw clean.

“It’s also lovely to see the children taking part in a litter pick and taking pride in their school grounds and surrounding area.

“This year we have had a fantastic response from groups and schools who want to organise their own spring clean. If you are planning a Spring Clean in your area, we’d love to help by providing you with bags, gloves, litter-pickers and high-viz vests and we will also collect the rubbish at an agreed location.”
