A Retford based International Athlete has won the 2019 Bassetlaw Dragons’ Den as his pitch saw him “run” away with a £5,000 investment for his business.
John Beattie, owner of Move Better Run Better, was selected by the dragons after demonstrating how a professional coaching program can teach runners to compete in a marathon or just enjoy running for pleasure, without increasing their risk of injury.
After securing the £5,000 investment, John said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have won the Bassetlaw Dragons Den event. Of course it was a big shock when my name was read out, but I prepared as thoroughly as I could – learning my pitch, memorising my numbers, and speaking from the heart when it came to telling my story. It’s such an honour that the judges have faith in what we are trying to achieve with Move Better Run Better and with the investment, we’ll now be able to help so many more runners around the world in more significant ways.
“Well done to the other competitors and massive thanks to the Dragons and the audience for making it a great evening to be involved with.”
John will be using the money to market and promote ‘Move Better Run Better’. The business was set up with the purpose of helping runners do exactly what the name says, move better and run better. His teaching is based on his own experience of running marathons all over the world and with a decade of experience as an international athlete, John is now able to pass on his knowledge by teaching others how to become better runners and stay injury free when competing.
In addition to the £5,000 first prize, the Dragons were also able to offer £2,500 to runner-up Sue and John Clifford and their business Store & Fulfil Ltd after winning the audience vote.
Sue and John said: “We were both surprised and delighted to be the People’s Choice winners. The recognition of the efforts and enterprise of our team is as welcome as the financial prize. It will enable us to move forward and we hope to bring new employment opportunities and new enterprise to the North Nottinghamshire region. Many thanks to all involved in staging the event.”
Jo White, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at the Council, said: “The pitches this year were amazing and all three competitors did a fantastic job.
All the Dragons were extremely impressed with John’s pitch and we wish John and his business all the success it deserves and we are sure that he will help many runners achieve the personal goals they are aiming for.”
This is the second time the Council have held a Dragons’ Den style event, the first being in 2017, which saw Dan Baker of DannyB Designs walk away with the top prize.
