More than £5m in Council Tax rebates already paid

Bassetlaw District Council is working hard to get the Government’s £150 Council Tax rebate to every eligible resident as quickly as possible.

Since the beginning of May, we have made payments totalling more than £5million to people in Bassetlaw who regularly pay their Council Tax by Direct Debit.

If you pay by Direct Debit and have not yet received your rebate, this may be because we require further information from you or need to carry out additional security checks. For this small percentage of residents, you will be contacted in the coming days so that we can send the £150 payment to you.

Residents who do not pay by Direct Debit will be contacted via email or letter starting from this week. This information will provide instructions on how you can claim the rebate, in addition to a unique verification code that you will need to provide for security purposes.

In order for the rebate to be processed, you will be asked to visit the Council’s website to provide your details and your unique verification code, in addition to confirming other security questions.

If you do not have access to the internet, you will be able to contact our Council Tax Team over the phone to provide all of the information we need to process your payment. Please wait until you have received your letter before contacting us.

David Hill, Director of Corporate Resources, said: “I’d like to thank Bassetlaw residents for their patience and apologise to residents who have not yet received the Government’s rebate. We appreciate that this payment is very important and people are keen to receive their £150. We’d like to reassure everyone that we are doing all we can to ensure that the payments are made as quickly as possible in a safe and secure way.

“The initial payments to customers who pay by Direct Debit have gone well and we are now focussing on residents who pay by other means, or where the circumstances may be a little more complex.

“We will process these payments as quickly as possible. However, we want to prevent fraud or errors in payment and ensure that this process is right first time.”

The Council Tax Rebate is a £150 payment to households in England in order to ease the rising costs of energy bills. Households in Council Tax bands A to D are eligible, which accounts for approximately 90% of households within the Bassetlaw District Council area.

Following the conclusion of payments to all households in Bands A to D, the Council will begin to process payments under the Discretionary Scheme. This is proposed to cover households in Bands E to H who are in receipt of Council Tax Reduction and meet all of the relevant criteria.

Please be aware that only one person who was liable for Council Tax on 1st April 2022 and is still resident may claim the rebate on behalf of the whole household. Please be alert to scams. We will always ask you to pass some security checks before confirming any bank details.
