Bassetlaw District Council is working hard to get the Government’s £150 Council Tax rebate to every eligible resident as quickly as possible.
Since the beginning of May, payments totalling more than £5million have been made to people in Bassetlaw who regularly pay their Council Tax by Direct Debit – this accounts for approx. 75% of households.
All eligible residents whose email addresses we hold and who do not pay their Council Tax by Direct Debit have now been sent emails, with around 400 payments being made this week. Residents are advised to check their emails, as around two thirds of recipients are yet to respond.
Letters are now being sent out to all eligible residents where we hold no details or a response has not yet been received. These letters set out how residents can submit their information to the Council and claim their rebate. These letters are being sent out in batches and should start to arrive during the week commencing 4th July.
In order for these payments to be processed as quickly as possible, eligible residents will be asked to visit the Council’s website to provide their details and a unique verification code, in addition to answering other security questions.
If you do not have access to the internet, you will be able to contact our Council Tax Team over the phone to provide all of the information we need to process your payment. Please wait until you have received your letter before contacting us.
A small percentage of residents who regularly pay by Direct Debit and who have not yet received their payments have also been contacted with a request for further information or to carry out additional security checks.
David Hill, Director of Corporate Resources, said: “We have made good progress with the distribution of the Council Tax Rebate in Bassetlaw and understand that people are keen to receive their £150.
“I’d like to thank residents for their patience so far and reassure everyone who has not yet received their payment that we are doing all we can to get your £150 payment to you as quickly as possible and in a safe and secure way.
“We want to prevent fraud or errors in payment and ensure that the payments are made to the right person, first time. As a result, this latter process has taken slightly longer that we would have hoped and we apologise to residents who have not yet received their payment.”
The Council Tax Rebate is a £150 payment to households in England in order to ease the rising costs of energy bills. Households in Council Tax bands A to D are eligible, which accounts for approximately 90% of households within the Bassetlaw District Council area.
Bassetlaw District Council is responsible for administering the Government’s Council Tax Rebate in our district and will make payments of more than £7million as part of the scheme.
Following the conclusion of payments to all households in Bands A to D, the Council will begin to process payments under the Discretionary Scheme. This is proposed to cover households in Bands E to H who are in receipt of Council Tax Reduction and meet all of the relevant criteria.
Please be aware that only one person who was liable for Council Tax on 1st April 2022 and is still resident may claim the rebate on behalf of the whole household. Please be alert to scams. We will always ask you to pass some security checks before confirming any bank details.
