Bassetlaw District Council has launched a consultation on the Draft Bassetlaw Local Plan, which sets out the Council’s priorities for housing, regeneration and other development in the district up to the year 2037.
Consultation on the Draft Bassetlaw Local Plan will last for six weeks and, as well as being available on the Council’s website, is being taken direct to residents across the district as Planning Policy Officers visit towns and villages as part of a 14 event tour of Bassetlaw.
The Plan promotes an innovative green agenda helping the District better adapt to the impact of climate change. Significant new tree planting, new wildlife habitats and a unique Energy Hub at the Former High Marnham Power Station site will put the District on the map in terms of renewable and low carbon technology development.
One of the key proposals will be a requirement for five new trees per home or per 1,000sqm of floor space for non-residential development. This equates to approximately 38,552 trees over the plan period or 192,760 carbon tonnes absorbed a year once complete (equivalent to 959 return flights between London and New York).
The Draft Local Plan includes:
- A minimum of 9,087 homes to be built in Bassetlaw by 2037
- A total of 108 hectares of land should be used for future employment
- The development of a new Garden Village
- A new development including housing, employment and a new distributer road at Peaks Hill, Thievesdale, Worksop
- 75 low carbon homes as a part development at Sandhills, Retford showcasing the highest quality of sustainable design, low carbon methods of construction and the use of renewable technologies contributing towards reducing the impact of the development on the environment and climate
Councillor Jo White, Deputy Leader of Bassetlaw District Council and Cabinet Member for Economic Development said:
“The Bassetlaw Plan is fundamental to the growth and success of our District over the next 17 years. This is the next stage of our conversation with local people, businesses and communities about how we can achieve Government housing requirements in a way that is positive for Bassetlaw residents now and in the future. One of the key areas that we are focusing on is the carbon offsetting of development. Our plan contains proposals for major tree planting and green energy growth.
“The Bassetlaw Local Plan also sets out the Council's aspirations for how land is allocated for jobs, investment and increased opportunities for local people. This is one of the most important pieces of work the Council is carrying out as it will have a major influence on the shape of this area for a generation. It is absolutely vital that people take a look at what is being proposed and have their say.
“I would encourage all Bassetlaw Residents to attend one of the 14 consultation events where you will be able to speak with the Planning Policy Officers who have created the Bassetlaw Plan, have a look at what the Plan contains, ask questions and be part of the conversation.”
