Bassetlaw District Council marked Commonwealth Day along with communities in 53 other countries as part of the international celebration, which this year spread the message ‘Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming.’
As part of the nationally co-ordinated event, Bassetlaw was one of hundreds of Commonwealth flags that was flown.
Children from the Norbridge Academy School Choir joined the Chairman of the Council, Councillor Deborah Merryweather at the event located at Worksop, where children from the Carr Hill Primary School Choir joined the Vice-Chairman of the Council, Councillor Jack Bowker in Retford.
During both events Councillors read out a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation, prior to the flag being raised.
Flag raising ceremonies took place on Monday 9 March at 9.45am at the following locations:
Worksop, Old Market Square – attended by Deputy Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, Christine Goldstraw; Chairman of the Council, Cllr Deborah-Merryweather, Leader of the Council, Cllr Simon Greaves; Canon Nicholas Spicer and pupils from the Norbridge School Choir.
Retford, Market Square – attended by Deputy Lieutenant for Nottinghamshire, Janet Richardson; BDC Vice-Chairman, Councillor Jack Bowker; Cllr Jo White; Reverend Sue Caddy and pupils from the Carr Hill Primary School Choir.
