Practical Driving Assessment

All new applicants are required to satisfactorily complete a practical driving assessment with the Council's specified tester, Personnel Checks. Bookings for the assessment can be made by calling 01254 355662. 

PLEASE NOTE - The person who is sitting the assessment is the person who must make the booking for the Practical Driving Assessment, bookings via third parties will not be accepted.

You will have to take the test in your own vehicle. At the time of booking the assessment you will be required to

  • Pay the fee of £90 (VAT inclusive)
  • The make, model and the colour of the vehicle which you will be using to sit the assessment

On the day of the assessment you will be required to attend in your vehicle at Coach Road, Shireoaks, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, S81 8BW. Please DO NOT go into the DVSA Test Centre as the DVSA no longer offer Taxi Driver Assessments. The assessor will come to your vehicle. Before the assessment can commence you will be required to produce:

  • Proof that you are insured to drive the vehicle, this must be fully comprehensive insurance
  • Your photo card driving licence
  • Proof of identity and address

What Does The Assessment Involve?

1. Eyesight Test

At the start, you’ll have to read a number plate from a distance of:

  • 20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate
  • 20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate

New-style number plates start with two letters followed by two numbers, for example, AB51 ABC.

You must use glasses or contact lenses during the whole test if you need them to read the number plate.

You cannot take the driving part of the assessment if you fail the eyesight test. 

2. Practical Assessment

The assessment will include:

  • a manoeuvre where you’ll be asked to turn your vehicle to face the opposite direction
  • around 10 minutes of driving without being given turn-by-turn directions by the examiner
  • stops at the side of the road as if a passenger is getting in or out
  • related questions, like what to do if a passenger leaves property in your vehicle
  • questions from The Highway Code and identifying traffic signs and road markings

You might also be asked to do an emergency stop.

To pass the assessment you must make no more than nine faults. You may also be failed if you make a serious or dangerous fault.

Applicants who can provide a valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence Card (CPC) with their application are to be exempt from providing proof that they have completed and passed the take the Practical Taxi Driving Assessment
