Who are Bassetlaw Youth Council? - Simran Uppal

Simran UppalSimran Uppal is currently in her 2nd term as the Member of Youth Parliament for Bassetlaw. The UK Youth Parliament is a governmental organisation that ‘enables young people to use their energy and passion to change the world for the better’. Additionally, Simran has held several other key leadership roles, leading many projects, and joining other youth organisations stemming from the Bassetlaw Youth Council. 

Her key achievements include:

  • Conducting a speech regarding climate change to over 300 at the University of Nottingham
  • Sitting in the House of Commons as a representative for Bassetlaw
  • A 200% increase in Nottinghamshire’s votes for the UK Youth Parliament consultation to decide the following year’s campaigns
  • Awards for Youth Councillor of the Year and Excellence in Chairing and Leadership
  • Selected as a representative for a youth consultation being conducted for the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26)
  • Invited to speak on a panel at the Mayor of Sheffield’s Transport Conference beside Olympians and leaders in the industry
  • Leading the project to create a Bassetlaw Youth Mayor which passed with a rare unanimous vote through the district council

Simran’s comment: ‘I am truly appreciative of the Bassetlaw Youth Council and every opportunity it has granted my colleagues and me, and especially thankful to Vanessa Cookson, the coordinator of the BYC who has made this all possible. These roles have equipped me with a high calibre skillset ready for the future. My main priorities have always been to understand the needs of our young people and act accordingly.’

Simran has been a dedicated member of the Bassetlaw Youth Council since 2016. Her original manifesto pledged to campaign for Climate Change and Mental Health; this has been delivered through several projects whilst also campaigning for other issues that have risen to her attention. Simultaneously she has sustained a high standard in her academic pursuits and is currently studying Maths, Chemistry and Further Maths A-levels. 

Below is a short timeline of Simran’s journey as a youth councillor:

  • June 2016: Joined the Bassetlaw Youth Council aged 13
  • Feb 2017: Elected the Member of Youth Parliament for Bassetlaw
  • Mar 2019: Elected the Chair of the Young People’s Board for Nottinghamshire
    • Chairing the Members of Youth Parliament across Nottinghamshire’s seven districts
  • Sept 2020: Re-established as the Member of Youth Parliament for Bassetlaw
