Waste and Recycling
The Council currently collects approximately 47,500 tonnes
of domestic waste each year from the 48,895 households within the
District. We employ a team of workers and vehicles to collect this
waste which is contained within wheeled bins provided to all
households for which there is a charge for their
provision £27.58 inc VAT effective from 1 April 2008
.
Currently over 48,400 households have been provided with a
second blue wheeled bin for the collection of recyclable materials
to reduce the amount of waste we take to landfill. Known as our
'Twin Bin' scheme, one bin is collected each week on an alternating
basis and by providing almost every household with a second blue
wheeled bin, has enabled us to reach a recycling rate of
24% during 2007.
To further assist our residents to recycle we
also provide in excess of 70 recycling "Bring Sites" throughout the
District where other recycling materials such as glass and
textiles, which we do not collect in the 'Blue' bin can be
taken.
The refuse service affects all our residents,
many of whom believe this is the main service they pay their
Council Tax for. In reality, however, the service only costs each
householder 74 pence per week.
The Council also provides if required a free
collection of Clinical Waste for residents from domestic premises
only. If you wish to request this service please
contact us on 01909 534501.
The responsibility for the disposal of household
waste is with Nottinghamshire County Council who work in close
consultation with ourselves to provide suitable disposal
arrangements for the materials we collect.
