‘A Sporting Chance’ is part of the Bassetlaw District Council’s Sport Development Unit.

The project began in 1998 with joint funding from The Single Regeneration Board and The East Midland Development Agency to deliver programmes in specific ward areas of Bassetlaw to work with 'difficult to engage' young people aged 10 to 24 by using sport as an initial engagement tool to interact with the project.

‘A Sporting Chance’ currently receives funding from Bassetlaw District Council, The Coalfield Regeneration Trust, Positive Futures/Catch 22 (through the Home Office) and a number of other, small funding bodies to enable this excellent work to continue.

The project’s emphasis is to encourage young people to take part in physical activity, eat more healthily and to move away from alcohol, smoking and taking drugs. As the project developed, it has also encouraged young people back into the educational system and supports them to gain a wide range of sport and other related qualifications.

There is an emphasis within the project on delivering activities that are designed to raise self esteem, improve teampositive futures logo building, communication skills and to improve the health and well-being of the young people involved.

The current funding received from the Coalfield Regeneration Trust has enabled the project to employ the Sports project Officer for a further 12 month period to March 2013 and to employ 2 apprentices.

The project’s activities take place both during and outside school hours, at weekends and during school holiday periods at various locations throughout the district. These activities can are varied and include: football, inline hockey, power kiting, climbing, kayaking, residential visits, street dance and more recently, its URBAN PAINTBALL project.  Since the project began is 1998 it has worked with an estimated 5,000 different young people, and since April 2006 the project has worked with over 1,200 different young people.

These young people have achieved:

  • Over 15,600 visits to sessions delivered by ‘A Sporting Chance’
  • Taken part in over 34,800 hours of activity
  • Gained over 500 qualifications in a wide range of sport and other related areas
  • Taken part in over 2,000 hours of voluntary work
  • In the last three years and with the support of the ESF/LSC funding, 21 young people have gained employment
