Noisy Neighbours & Pollution

This section has responsibility for controlling the
large polluting processes within the District (with the exception
of powers station s and some particularly large organisation).
It does this though the official legislation called the
Environmental Protection Act. Licenses are issued to the
processors providing they can prove that they are meeting certain
standards in terms of pollution control and operation.
The section also provides help and assistance for
companies liable to fall under this control and also carries out
Air Quality monitoring to make sure we are making progress within
out Air Quality Management Plan.
We seek to protect the local environment and the
public by tackling a variety of problems that cause a nuisance to
residents or pollution of the environment.
We investigate all relevant nuisance complaints
and pollution incidents including:
- Emissions of dust, fumes and odours into
the atmosphere
- Noise and smoke from industrial and
commercial properties
- Smoke from garden bonfires
- Enforcement of smoke control
areas
- Loud music and noisy
neighbours
- Barking dogs
- House and car alarms
- Noise from construction sites
- Dumped rubbish
- Dog fouling
We monitor for air pollution, noise and land
contamination.
We contribute to the assessment of planning
applications where there is a potential for pollution.
The Environmental Health Department is active in
monitoring pollution and taking steps to secure improvements.
Officers will respond to individual requests for help such as
dealing with noisy neighbours, barking dogs or noisy industrial
premises.
All complaints are treated in our strictest
confidence and if we are unable to help you directly, we will try
and advise you who can.
