What is Council Tax?
Council Tax is the way that Council's raise money to pay
for services such as refuse collection, education, social services,
libraries, planning, community safety, fire and rescue services and
much more. Council Tax is a charge on domestic dwellings for
example houses, flats and bungalows.
Who is responsible for Payment?
For occupied properties it is normally the responsibility of the
owner occupier or tenant.
The bill will be payable by the person(s) who comes first in the
list below, starting at the top and working down.
- Owner occupier
- Resident leaseholder
- Resident statutory or secure tenant
- Resident licensee
- A resident
- The owner (when the property is empty)
For example if an owner occupier was resident he/she would
pay. If not resident then the resident leaseholder will
pay. If neither of these are resident, the secure tenant will
be liable, and so on down the list.

In some cases the owner, and not the resident, will be liable
for Council Tax:
Houses in multiple occupation
Residential nursing/care homes and hostels
Second homes with domestic servants
Accommodation occupied by asylum seekers
Religious communities
Vicarages or other property where a minister of religion lives
and works
Special rules apply when a property is unoccupied, more
information can be found in our No-one at home?
leaflet.
The charges in the your 2010/11 Council Tax
Leaflet are based on TWO adult residents. If you
live in parts of the Bassetlaw District where no parish charge
applies, the last but one line of the table relates to you.
This covers residents in Askham, Bole, Carburton, Clumber and
Hardwick, Haughton, Scaftworth, Wallingwells, West Burton and
Worksop.

Some adults living in a property are disregarded (do not
count when calculating Council Tax). If after disregarding
all the adults that don't count, the number of adults living in the
property is one a 25% discount will apply. If all adults are
disregarded (do not count) then a 50% discount can
be given.
More information
about discounts and disregards is included in our Pocket Guide to Council Tax
No.2 discounts and disregards.
