You’ll be amazed at what we do in Revenues and Customer
Services.
In brief, we are one of 6 service blocks run by
Bassetlaw District Council. We bill and collect around £100m
annually in Council Tax and Business Rates, as well as sundry
income. We also pay out around £30m in Benefits annually to people
on low incomes. I manage the Revenues and Customer Services
service. My name is Andrew Burton.
I have been with the Council for 16 years, matching the years at
Sheffield MDC before that. I have 2 sons, and my older one
Alex helped me to update this page during a placement with us
for his work experience. It’s amazing how quickly youngsters grasp
the wonders of the interweb and how important electronic
communication is to them. No more will I make excuses for not
keeping my service pages up to date!
We are quite innovative and modern in our service
approach.
We also work with other councils in the interest of
efficiency.

Our creative Direct Debit campaigns are now shared with
over 45 other local authorities and by pooling expertise, we
make considerable savings. We also influence others with strategies
for Direct Debit. By converting bill payers for council tax across
to Direct Debit, we make savings on collection and the customer
benefits by later payment and greater choice.

A new Direct Debit campaign was launched in February 2008
featuring the Creature Comfort Characters, 'Captain Cuddlepuss and
Trixe'. We have been pooling our efforts with over 30 other
councils, and by working together have come up with this
eye-catching leaflet. You can download a copy of the
Direct Debit Instruction and take a closer look.
We also work with the County Council, Fire and Police
Authorities on joint Council Tax information sent with bills. It
would be wasteful and inefficient if we sent separate leaflets. In
2004 we carried out customer research, which helped us to shape the
quality of the joint leaflets.
The Cabinet Member for the service is Councillor Chris
Wanless. He says:
“We always knew we had a good service in Revenues but its now
official. The Audit Commission Inspection as part of Best Value
gave us a 2 star rating (good service, promising prospects) in
2002.
The staff are experienced, very professional and helpful to bill
payers, benefit claimants and, as is the case, those needing help
to pay the bills.
The service is nationally recognised and respected. They have
won numerous Direct Debit awards in recent years; they hold Charter
Mark and were the first ever winners of Team of the Year from
the Institute of Revenues, Rating and Valuation. This
service does a great deal to put Bassetlaw, the Council and the
community on the map.”
