The Sustainability Appraisal (SA) process is a
way of ensuring that plans and programmes relating to the
development and use of land are compatible with the aims of
sustainable development. Sustainable development is about ensuring
that the needs of everyone can be met now, without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
The SA process involves production of a
Scoping Report that sets out the level of detail and scope of
environmental information to be included in the full Sustainability
Appraisal. The SA objectives set out in the Scoping Report are then
used to test the likely impacts of each Development Plan Document
