International, European and national policy commit the UK to
reducing its impact on climate change and increasing the supply of
energy from renewable and low carbon sources. These commitments are
reflected in emerging regional policy and need to be translated
into local policy and action.
Planning has a significant role to play in achieving these
commitments, by: Understanding the local feasibility and potential
for renewable and low-carbon technologies;
identifying suitable areas for renewable and low-carbon energy
sources and supporting infrastructure; setting standards for
new development.
This study informs the Local Development Framework by making
recommendations for planning policy to reduce the impact of
development in Bassetlaw on climate change. It also considers other
mechanisms which the Council can use to promote energy efficiency
and a decentralised renewable and low carbon energy supply in the
District.
