Archaeology is the study of past people and civilisations
through their artefacts, inscriptions, monuments, buildings and
other remains. Bassetlaw has a rich archaeological record
which allows us to understand our ancestors over the last 10,000
years. Some archaeological sites are acknowledged as being of
national importance and have been classed as Scheduled Ancient
Monuments. Other sites, that are known about are recorded on
the
Nottinghamshire Sites and Monuments Record (SMR). The SMR
contains information on sites and finds of archaeological interest
of all periods, from Palaeolithic to World War II, and of all types
from single finds to large industrial complexes.
The
Sites and Monuments Record is held at Nottinghamshire County
Council. The archaeologists at Nottinghamshire County
Council provide specialist advise to the District Planning
authority when it has been identified that there are archaeological
considerations as part of planning applications.
