Retford Christmas Lights Switch On
A winter festival of local food and light
This year’s Christmas lights switch on takes place on Tuesday
1st December. Council Chairman, Helen Colton said, “The theme for
this year’s event will be a winter festival of food and light and
the switch on will be dedicated to all those service men who
sacrificed their lives in the current and past conflicts. We aim to
remember at this special time of the year, the families whose loved
ones are on active service or who have lost loved ones. We’re
inviting everyone to join us in a special tribute to them, with a
memorial candle being lit to honour them and donations can be made
to support our local troops at Christmas.”
The event features a Frankfurter style winter market of local
food and drink beginning at 10:00am and ending at 7:30pm. People
can sample the delights of German mulled wine (Gluwein), grilled
sausages, German beer and, for those with a sweet tooth,
gingerbread and marzipan sweets. A range of traditional local
produce will also be available. Welbeck School of Artisan Food will
be demonstrating traditional seasonal baking.
The formal switch on ceremony begins with a candlelight
procession with pupils from local schools, led by live reindeer and
pantomime characters from the Talegate Theatre company.
After a brief pantomime performance, Worksop Miners Welfare
Brass Band will pay tribute to the work of local armed forces and
Community Carol Service will lead the formal switch on ceremony.
Councillor Colton will switch on the lights at 6:45pm.
At 7:00pm a specially written pantomime begins, featuring
Cinderella, Queen Rat, the Ugly Sisters and more, will be
staged.

Festivities will end at 8:00pm.
