Mayoral Chain

Lord Mayors ChainAn illustrious part of Worksop’s past has been returned to the people of the town – 77 years after it was first displayed.

Warwickshire resident John Vine has donated the gold attachment to the chain for the then Lord Mayor of Worksop Borough Council as a permanent loan to Bassetlaw District Council.

Rene Longbottom, wife of the former Lord Mayor of the Council and Honorary Alderman, Charles Arthur Longbottom, bequeathed Mr Vine’s late mother – Elsie Vine – the attachment.

And now Mr Vine has kindly decided to allow it to be displayed in Worksop Town Hall for everyone to see.

“It is a beautiful chain, and I am pleased that it can now be displayed for everyone to see,” said Bassetlaw District Council Chairman Councillor Wendy Quigley.

“I wouldn’t like to put a monetary value on it, but in terms of the history of the town and of this Council, it is a priceless artifact.”

The attachment will be displayed in the main cabinet, which is located on the Ground Floor of Queen’s Buildings.

Mr Longbottom was Lord Mayor of the Borough Council from 1931 – 1934.
