Severe Weather Night Shelter

Due to the continued cold weather that has been forecast for the weekend and beyond, the Council’s Severe Weather Night Shelter at Crown Place Community Centre on Sandy Lane, Worksop will now be open until at least Wednesday 7th March.

The full opening times are as follows:

Friday 2 March 2018 – 7.00pm – 7.00am

Saturday 3 March 2018 – 10.00pm – 7.00am

Sunday 4 March 2018 – 8.00pm – 7.00am

Monday 5 March 2018 - 9.30pm – 7.00 am

Tuesday 6 March 2018 - 7.00pm – 7.00am

Wednesday 7 March 2018 - 7.30pm – 7.00am

Severe Weather Night Shelters are set up when the outside temperature is set to drop below zero degrees centigrade for three consecutive nights. The Council has been providing this shelter since Saturday 24th February.

Outreach Workers from Framework, the Council, the Police and a number of other agencies are in regular contact with people who are sleeping rough and have made them aware of the shelter.

While the shelter is based at Crown Place Community Centre in Worksop, free transport has been offered to people known to be homeless, regardless of where they are currently living. Some people have taken up this offer, while other individuals have made a personal choice to decline this offer.

Anyone requiring access to the shelter can arrive up to 12 midnight where they will be asked to sign in. Access after this time will be at the discretion of the security team who are managing the facility for the safety of people staying overnight.

Anyone considered to be under the influence of drugs, alcohol or other substances will not be allowed into the centre and there will be a zero tolerance of violence, threatening or other unacceptable behaviour.

Up until Friday morning, a total of 15 people have used the shelter.

In terms of long-term provision for homelessness, the Council works throughout the year with the individuals concerned and the relevant agencies to place people in the most appropriate accommodation, as well as work to prevent people becoming homeless in the first place.
