The Winners

Local sporting superstars and dedicated volunteers were recognised by Bassetlaw District Council as it recently held its annual Sports Awards for 2016.

Winners and nominees gathered at the Elizabethan Academy in Retford on Friday 2 December where the 11 eventual champions were announced in front of a packed audience.

All were presented their awards by Rio Olympic Athlete and Marathon runner Kevin Seaward, while this year’s demonstration was provided by Retford Gymnastics Club.

Cllr Julie Leigh, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “The annual Bassetlaw Sports Awards always highlight the fantastic achievements of sportspeople, coaches and volunteers over the course of the year.

“We live in a truly sporting district and while the ceremony focused on individual and team winners, credit and acknowledgement also needs to go to all the unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes and enable our athletes to reach and surpass their goals.

“Thanks must also go to our hosts; the Elizabethan Academy and the young students who gave their time and effort to support the event; members of Retford Gymnastic Club who put on such an excellent display; and our special guests Kevin Seaward and John Beattie for delivering such inspirational speeches. Without this support, events like this just would not be possible.

“Bassetlaw is blessed with a tremendous sporting infrastructure and a great number of volunteers who dedicate their time to ensure that future sporting success and high quality achievements will continue to be celebrated for many years to come.”
