The purpose of a food hygiene inspection is to ensure that food
sold to the public is safe to consume. We have approximately
930 registered food premises in the Bassetlaw district.
Of the food premises that were due for inspection between 1
April 2009 and 31 March 2010, we inspected 100% of
the high risk premises and 99% of the low
risk premises. Additionally, we make many
extra visits to food premises when following up on complaints.
We not only ensure that the structure, fittings and operators in
food business do not contaminate foodstuffs, but also assess the
risks involved in storing, preparing and producing food.
The most common reason for food
poisoning occurring is food being prepared too far in advance
and being left at room temperature for too long. Where
there is an imminent risk to public health we can prevent
businesses opiating until such times as they are considered
safe.
