All domestic residences,
commercial, or other premises are advised to have their own
flooding contingency arrangements in place before flooding
occurs.
Local Authorities do not have a
duty to provide sandbags during floods.
It is the responsibility of all homeowners/residents to protect
their own property.
Hessian sacks and sand can be purchased from DIY stores and
Builders Merchants.
Homeowners of properties that have previously flooded are
strongly advised by Bassetlaw District Council to seek to provide
their own sandbags and other flood defence products before floods
happen.
Due to the excessive demand placed on the Council during floods,
sandbag delivery cannot be guaranteed.
However, during a flood Bassetlaw District Council will attempt
to provide sandbags to properties considered to be at highest risk
from flooding. Any sandbags issued by the Council will be on
a priority basis determined by our assessment of the risk and
the effectiveness of the sandbags.
The programme for delivery of
sandbags will be based on a multi agency risk assessment and
identification of areas / properties most immediately at risk.
The extent of sandbag provision will
be defined by the availability of resources, the level of risk to
the people within the premises and the degree of protection
afforded by the measures.
