Every year Bassetlaw District Council investigates numerous
reports of abandoned vehicles. Some of these turn out to be
genuinely abandoned and have to be removed and destroyed after
enquiries into their ownership.
If you wish to report an abandoned
vehicle in your area, please fill an submit our Report an abandoned vehicle form.
It is important that you have the
following details available when you report it to us:-
- Has the vehicle got a valid tax disc?
- The exact location of the vehicle
- The vehicle make, model and colour
- The vehicle registration number
Please note that if the vehicle is
taxed, it is not technically abandoned.
Untaxed vehicles that are on public
roads are not the responsibility of the local authority and should
be reported through to the Driver and Vehicle
Licensing Agency (DVLA). For further assistance regarding
untaxed vehicles please contact DVLA on 0300 790
6802.
Penalties and Charges
Once ownership of an abandoned
vehicle has been confirmed the Council will contact the registered
owner to request that the vehicle is removed. If the vehicle
has not been removed by the date specified, the Council will
arrange for the vehicle to be removed.
This is likely to incur expenses
for which the registered owner will be liable. There is
currently a charge of £12 per day storage fees and an abandonment
fee charge of £105. In addition to this, should the vehicle
be disposed of there will be an additional £50 charge to the above
and we reserve the right to claim for any administration costs
incurred in the removal of the vehicle.
Under Government legislation the
maximum penalty is currently £2500 and / or 3 months
imprisonment.
