What we are doing on Equalities

What we are doing:

  • The Council has helped to establish BOFF (Bassetlaw Over Fifties Forum)
  • Supports the work of Age Concern
  • Giving free use of the Buttermarket at Retford Town Hall has helped the Bassetlaw Action Centre, with support from Bassetlaw PCT and the County Council, to relocate Age Retford's Resource for Older People
  • Established a Youth Participation Worker with external funding
  • Bassetlaw Youth Council and a "Young People's Champion" (District Councillor) helps to give you direct feedback on local issues.
  • Through a patient survey, developed a more patient focussed exercise referral scheme
  • Sporting Chance consultation conducted as part of Friday evening provision linked to anti social behaviour and alcohol misuse
  • Working with Schools on Citizenship eg "Question Time" session.

  • Users of the Shopmobility service at both Worksop and Retford gives us feedback on access issues
  • Through parents' consultation of the SAND Sports Disability Club to help develop future sporting opportunities offered

  • The Council jointly employs a Domestic Violence Co-ordinator with Newark and Sherwood Council
  • Working with the Bassetlaw based Nottinghamshire Women's Aid
  • The Sports Development team are developing more sports and physical opportunities for girls and women
  • Supporting work on Domestic Violence

  • Through the Local Strategic Partnership, set up the Stronger Communities Group.  The Group works with migrant workers and has developed a range of local support information in response to their needs
  • Working with the Bassetlaw Afro-Caribbean Group

Rural Access

What we are doing:

  • Rural Conference held in Bassetlaw to focus on issues facing our local communities.
  • The District Council supports the North East Bassetlaw Forum - 8 Parish Councils working together on local issues
  • Jointly funds with Nottinghamshire Rural Community Action Network, a rural officer who provides direct support to rural communities
  • With our partners, helped establish the Transport and Accessibility Group of the Local Strategic Partnership.  The group helps to ensure that accessibility issues are incorporated into County and Regional strategies
  • Through consultation with parents and young people who attend the rural outreach school holiday sports schemes delivered by Sports Development staff
  • Ensuring issues around access for rural dwellers are recognised ny other service providers.

What we are doing:

  • Addressing  Fuel Poverty by improving properties and encouraging take up of Warmfront grants
  • Improving the quality of homes and housing provision
  • Supporting economic regeneration
  • Introduce a 48 hour claim guarantee to speed up Benefit Claims
  • Working with Citizens Advice Bureau and Worksop Credit Union on new facilities at Queen's Buildings
  • Supporting the work of the Food Bank.
