Retford Town Centre

Retford Market

Retford Market

The historic market town of Retford was granted its first charter (the right to hold a fair) by Henry III in 1246 and this was extended in 1275 by Edward I to allow a Saturday market: a tradition that continues today.  Retford offers an impressive range of traditional high street stores and a fabulous selection of specialist and independent shops.  The very popular open-air market is held in the market square each Thursday and Saturday against a backdrop of fine Georgian buildings.  On the third Saturday of every month, Retford plays host to a popular farmers' market where a variety of local produce is on sale.  On Fridays, browsers can seek out bargains at the antiques and brick-a-brac market.

If you have some time to spare, visit the Bassetlaw Museum, which was refurbished and extended in 2008.  It tells the story of local life, work and war from the earliest times to the 21st Century, whilst the Rural Heritage Centre portrays Bassetlaw's farming and rural craft industries.  For more information please visit the Bassetlaw Museum website.

Kings Park

Alternatively, if you want some time to relax, visit the idyllic Kings' Park, located just off the Market Square.  The town centre park with the River Idle flowing through it is perfect for leisurely walks to admire the colourful floral displays.
