A NEW memorial to commemorate the heroic actions of Sgt.
Johnson, V.C. in World War I will be officially unveiled during a
ceremony on Thursday 12th July at 6.30pm.
A plaque that sits in the gardens of Worksop Library was stolen
by metal thieves at the end of January 2012, however, a replacement
has generously been provided by County Councillor Glynn
Gilfoyle.
Sgt. Johnson was awarded the Victoria Cross for most conspicuous
bravery at Ramicourt, northern France on the 3rd of October,
1918.*
The short service will be led by Father Spicer of Worksop Priory
and will be attended by the grandson of Sgt. Johnson.
Other dignitaries in attendance will be the Chairman of
Bassetlaw District Council Ian Campbell and other Council
representatives, Coun Gilfoyle, representatives of the Royal
British Legion, Fellowship of the Services and local Cadet
Forces.
