One of the most popular summer events in Bassetlaw is the annual
Farm and Country Festival. This is staged by Bassetlaw Museum in
the grounds of its home, Amcott House, 40 Grove Street, Retford.
The 2011 Festival will be held over the last weekend in June,
Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th
Cllr Julie Leigh, portfolio holder for Environment and Leisure,
said “Last year the Festival attracted well over 7,500 people.
Visitors this year can again see vintage tractors and a steam
driven traction engine as well as a variety of country crafts
demonstrations.
“The Museum, which is owned and operated by the Bassetlaw
District Council, aims to preserve and showcase the unique cultural
heritage of the District. Its collections include items dating back
to prehistoric times as well as local objects from Roman times to
the present day. Above all, however, the Museum aims to be a place
where things happen and the Farm and Country Festival has become
something of a tradition, promoting the rural links that give
Bassetlaw its distinctive character.”
Curator of the Museum, Sam Glasswell, says “Admission to the
Festival, which runs from 10 am to 4 pm on both days, is free.
“Younger visitors can have fun with hands-on activities and
everyone can try their hand at rope making. We’re also really
pleased to be able to have stands from Notts Wildlife Trust,
Butterfly Conservation Trust and also a display of wildlife
photographs. The Percy Laws Gallery also features an exhibition by
the Retford and District Photographic Society.
“There will also be demonstrations by watercolour and stained
glass artists, sugar crafters, a chance to see a gypsy caravan,
performances by Retford Oaks School band and displays by Pauline's
Line Dancers from Retford and the Retford Judo Club. Local produce
will be available and there will be card and book stalls,
refreshments and ice cream.”
