The first of three flood relief schemes, costing a
total of £380 000, has just been completed at Treswell. The £80k
relief overflow was built immediately upstream of the highway
culvert and will carry excessive flows direct to the catchwater
drain via a field channel and triple pipes under Rampton Lane, that
will reduce the risk of flooding.
According to Cllr June Evans, portfolio holder for Finance and
Property, which includes principal engineering services, “The
floods of June 2007 resulted in many properties flooding across
Bassetlaw. In Treswell several properties on Cottam Road and
upstream were affected by flooding because Lee Beck, where it
passes under a highway culvert could not handle the volume of
water. This scheme was designed and project managed by JBA
Consulting and the main contractor was Quantum Construction
Services Ltd.”
The Council’s Principal Engineering Services manager, John
Bowler, says “It has taken nearly 2 years of close partnership
working with the Environment Agency, Nottinghamshire County Council
and other organisations to reach this stage with the support of JBA
Consulting in preparing the detailed submission bids.
“A second flood mitigation scheme, costing £200k on the River
Ryton and Canch in Worksop, is also underway and is due for
completion in early July 2011. This is intended to reduce the risk
of flooding that occurred in the Priorswell Road and Shelley Street
area during June 2007. The work includes renewing the bridge and
penstock at the end of the Canch, which will increase the flow
capacity. The penstock and sluice no longer worked due to
structural failure of the bridge. Improvements to the profile of
the river where it passes under Priorswell Road and bio-diversity
enhancements to the Canch will also reduce the overall flood risk
to the area.
“The third scheme is a £100k partnership project at North
Wheatley, with Nottinghamshire County Council also acting as
designers and contractor. Part of the work involves diverting
utility mains to facilitate the main construction of twin concrete
box culverts under the highway. These diversions are already
underway. This work will involve a road closure and will take place
during the summer school holidays, July/August 2011.
