Out and About in Bassetlaw

There is no shortage of places and attractions to visit in the district of Bassetlaw. Families will enjoy Sundown Adventure Land and Wetlands Waterfowl Reserve and those with a taste for nostalgia will find Bassetlaw Museum, Mr Straw's House and The Walks of Life Heritage Centre fascinating.

Some of Bassetlaw’s smaller towns and villages stage special events throughout the year. These range from scarecrow and flower festivals to craft fairs and village fetes.  Visit Retford or Worksop Tourist Information Centres for up-to-date information on these activities.

Country lanes, towpaths, bridleways and cycle routes are abundant in Bassetlaw.  A very informative ‘Cycling in Bassetlaw’ leaflet is available from Retford and Worksop Tourist Information Centres. The main offroad cycling route is the Millennium Cycle Way Route 6 (York to Derby) which enters Bassetlaw via the Chesterfield Canal before entering Clumber Park and then passing through the heart of Sherwood Forest before reaching Nottingham.

For shorter cycling routes visit Clumber Park (cycles available to hire) for its way marked routes.  The annual Guided Walks in Nottinghamshire leaflet, available from Retford and Worksop Tourist Information Centres or by visiting the Sherwood Forest website which features a variety of local walks including historical, health, wildflower and birdwatching, and seasonal themed rambles of various lengths.

Pick up the Retford Heritage Trail and enjoy a self-guided walk pointing out the hidden architectural and historical gems of this pretty market town.

The 46 mile Chesterfield Canal Cuckoo Way towpath is accessible throughout Bassetlaw.

Alternatively a canal boat ride allows you to experience the tranquillity of the canal in

leisurely comfort.
